School as the Great Equalizer

School, it is said, is the one aspect of experience that all persons have in common. This is not to say that all of the memories people remember about school are the same, but for the most part, we share the fact that we all bought into the ideology of school as the “great equalizer”. In some way or another, people have been socialized to believe in the institution of school as the one area where all individuals receive an equal opportunity to achieve the Northern American dream. Whether it has been advertised through popular culture or taught in our homes, education—the pen—is symbolized to be mightier than the sword. With this omnipotent pen people can identify themselves with an elite group of “pen-holders” known as leaders who carry the influential means to execute personal and global ends. It seems, at least in the respect of a “pen-holder”, that school is a mechanism for social change because as part of the privileged one can alter the rules of society to work for them instead of over them. Yet, if school were this blind equalizer giving everyone free tickets to Prosperity Point, then there would be no separation between “pen-holders” and those holding nothing.
