The effect of Nazi censorship on Modernist Artists
I have chosen to research German Abstract artist Willi Baumeister (1889-1955), and how Nazi censorship affected his artwork, career and creative freedom in fascist Germany. In relation to my topic, I have focused on Baumeister’s controversial image of “The Avenger” with head drawn”(1941) a defacement of a postcard with Arno Breker’s marble relief statue of ‘The Avenger”. I found this work particularly interesting, and related to my topic of research as Breker was one of Hitler’s favourite sculptors, and the original “Avenger” was commissioned for the Great German Art Exhibition in 1941, as a portrayal of fascist ideology. Baumeister’s defacement of this image (a cartoon face placed over the genitals of this image) is a parody of the Hitler’s Third Reich art- purebred and authorative artworks. The fact that Baumeister was able to create this controversial (and at the time) extremely dangerous works, adds interest to my research on how Baumeister’s art and career were really affected by the Nazi party.
Willi Baumeister was one of many modernist German artists to be labelled ‘degenerate’ according to Hitler and the National Socialists ideologies. Modern art was considered unacceptable to the Reich,
