A Holocaust Survivors Struggle

She started leaving him and his two siblings alone until very late and sometimes she left them for long periods of time. By the time he was eleven my grandfather's mother had been put into an insane asylum by his grandmother who he would have to live with.

My grandfather told me all about his years with his grandmother. She was very strict and insisted on good grades and perfect manners. He told me how he would put spinach in his pockets and then hose it out after his grandmother had gone to sleep. The only really good thing about him living with his grandmother was that she was very rich. Her property was on the grounds of something government related so she got paid to keep the area clean. He didn't have any jobs when he was a teenager but he liked to help the gardeners with the yard work and sometimes he helped load trucks with workmen.
