Neo-Conservative Historians

    A Neo-Conservative History Each nation possesses a sequence of chronological events that formulates its past. These past issues have then been interpreted by various intellectuals, and then retold through various perspectives. This concept called history is important because it can often be examined and re-examined in relation to the development of new current issues and events. In the case of the United States, Grob and Billias, in “Why Study History and Who Are These Historians,” describe four different types of historians that have done this: the New England Amateurs, the Progressive Historians, the Neo-Conservatives, and the new Leftists. The Amateurs and the New Leftists focus on the conflict and failures, action versus reaction, and change. Although these aspects are important, as in every country, it is greatly important, especially when writing a textbook, to recognize a country’s achievements and its unique unifying themes that sustain throughout the changes, as a neo-conservative historian would carry out.
