1. Pip "Philip Pirrip" - He is the main character, protagonist and narrator of Great Expectations and lives in the marsh country of Kent, in south-east England He begins the story as an orphan boy being raised by his sister and her husband, which is Mrs. Joe and Joe Gargery. Pip is passionate, romantic, and somewhat unrealistic at heart, and he tends to expect more for himself than is reasonable. He is very generous as which can be seen throughout the book; with him helping Magwitch and secretly buying Herbert's way into business, etc. Pip also has a powerful conscience and deeply wants to improve himself to be the best he can be: morally, socially and educationally. He is the most important character of this novel and I think understanding Pip's character, gives you a better understanding of "Great Expectations." He has essential love for all who have love for him. He judges his past actions extremely harsh, rarely giving himself credit for good deeds he has done.
