Clear-Cutting Affects Salmon
or the first time in the history of this province, a coalition
has asked for a moratorium on logging. The Coalition for the
Integrated Management of the Cascapedia River Watershed is asking
that cutting be stopped on two important tributaries of this world-famous salmon river in the Gaspe peninsula. Deforestation is one of this province's most important primary industries, and clear-cutting accounts for more than 90 per cent of all logging practices. The group is rightly concerned that this
has so degraded the Lake Branch tributary that salmon can no longer spawn there.
The Department of Natural Resources has tacitly agreed with their
tHEassessment of increased sedimentation, but chooses to blame the logging roads for the problem and not the lack of trees.
