Islam In America With followers surpassing the one and a half billion mark, Islam is the world’s second largest religion. It is also the fastest growing religion in the world and in the United States. In ten years, the population of Muslims (followers of Islam) in the United States went from four million to eight million, making Islam the second largest religion in the United States (Young, 1997). However, Islam in this country is different than what is practiced in the rest of the world. There is a western influence on the religion and because of this it is not as conservative or orthodox as once before. Islam is not a new religion.
