Human Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome
HIV is a sexually transmitted disease. HIV stands for Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus. Each letter has its own meaning to determining the actual disease name HIV. The “H” in HIV stands for Human because the virus can only infect human beings. The “I” in HIV stands for Immuno-Deficiency because the effect of the virus is to create a deficiency a failure to work properly, within the body’s immune system. And finally the “V” in HIV stands for Virus because this organism is a virus, which means one of its characteristics is that it is incapable of reproducing by itself. It reproduces by taking over the machinery of the human cell.
Many researchers believe HIV is the cause of AIDS. Along with other diseases HIV is able to spread. Some of the activities that allow HIV transmission are: Sexual Activities, Needle sharing, needle sticks, mother to child and also blood transfusions. To go into further detail certain sexual activities include: Sexual intercourse (vaginal and anal), in the genitals and the rectum, HIV may infect the mucous membranes directly or enter through cuts and sores caused during intercourse.
