Gloria Estefan
On September 1, 1957, Gloria Maria Milgrosa Fajardo was born in Havana, Cuba. When she was only two years old, her family fled from the Castro government of Cuba and came to live in Miami. Her father had been a Cuban soldier. When Gloria was just a little girl, her father was recruited for the 2506 Brigades. He was head of the Tanks Division and led the invasion at the Bay of Pigs, the unsuccessful attempt to oust Castro from power, in 1961. Her father spent a year and a half in jail while Gloria and her mother lived in a Cuban ghetto outside of Miami. During this time, she sang for women whose husbands were in jail too. Her father was released in 1963. The family moved to Texas where her sister, Rebecca, was born. Gloria’s father volunteered for Vietnam and after two years he came home.
