Creating a Society: The Educational Institution

    Based on your readings from your text: 1. The function of a society¡¯s educational institution is to teach the younger generation whatever knowledge that they need in order to succeed as an adult, no matter what occupation they end up taking. This may include the basic knowledge of the sciences, the histories, the languages, math, etc. but also to learn essential ¡°people skills¡± such as etiquette, group working skills, etc. One of the more obvious functions is to prepare the students for their future occupation. Also, it exists to teach the younger generation the norms and values of the society, as well as train them to be model citizens. It helps to boost nationalism, and aids the development of the society. 2. One of the major problems that the US educational system has is that the people are not treated equally in education. Minorities do not have as much access to the better educational programs that are offered. Another problem that I see is that the school systems are too lenient to the students. We all wonder why America is slowly falling behind other nations of the world academically. I believe it¡¯s in part to the system being a little too easy. In Korea, the students go to school about 4 hours long
