Black Women’s Attitudes on Legalizing Abortion
In the United States, there has been a public debate on the legal status of abortion for more than 20 years (Lynxwiler and Gay 1996). Researchers have become interested in understanding women’s attitudes toward legalizing abortion. They have become especially interested in how race affects the women’s attitudes toward abortion. Researchers know very little about Black women’s abortion attitudes because research has not examined Black women’s abortion attitudes over time (Lynxwiler and Gay 1996). A study done by John Lynxwiler and David Gay, “The Abortion Attitudes of Black Women: 1972-1991” reveals that the Black women’s attitudes toward abortion has changed over a period of 20 years and that demographic factors influence their attitudes.
The method of research used in Lynxwiler and Gay’s study is the 1972-1991 General Social Survey questionnaire. Each questionnaire consisted of six questions on the attitudes of legal abortion under different circumstances. The study does not provide information
