    1. “The old stable at the end of the garden was locked, but I had long ago discovered a way in.” (Page 164) This garage in this passage illustrates a place that Vanessa wanted to escape to. Most people would be unable to get in to the stable because of the locked door, but Vanessa has found a way to escape to the place she would like to be. Grandfather’s car is the place she escapes to to write a story that enchanted her, but as she thinks about the story in the car, she realizes that the main character, Marie, “would not get out of the gray stone inn. She would stay there all her life,” and this frightened Vanessa to the point that she, “could not bear it. [She] no longer wanted to finish the story.” This realization that the character in her story could not leave, did not stop Vanessa from planning ways to escape again through her stories and writing and finding new places to hide her scribblers.
