What Protects Us From Ultraviolet Light?
Experiment 5: What Protects us from Ultraviolet Light?
The objective of this experiment was, of course, to determine what protects us from UV light. By using UV sensitive beads that change color (when exposed to UV light) and different protective materials, we were able to ascertain data that could tell us what materials protect us and what materials do not protect us. The protective materials that we used included the following: SPF 45 sunscreen, plastic wrap, and hand lotion. A method of control that we used was to expose unprotected beads to sunlight to determine the time it took for the bead to change to its final color. We used these control beads as a comparison to the beads that we applied protection to, in order to calculate the correct time it took for the uncontrolled beads to change to the final color. Also, we conducted multiple trials (6) for each of our materials to attain an average time of total change.
The data we collected can be seen in the following table:
Control Bead SPF 45 Plastic Wrap Hand Lotion
Trial 1 5 seconds 15 sec. 19 sec. 6 sec.
Trial 2 5 sec. 14 sec. 16 sec. 7 sec.
Trial 3 5 sec. 14 sec. 14 sec. 8 sec.
Trial 4 4 sec. 14 sec. 17 sec. 9 sec.
Trial 5 5 sec. 15 sec. 18 sec. 8 se
