Video Games and Memory Loss
My 12-year-old son has a Sega DreamCast, Sega Genesis, Gameboy, Nintendo, and a computer with over a hundred games combined. He wants to play video games from the time he wakes up to the time he goes to bed. If he is not at home playing, then he is at his friend’s house playing with his Playstation II. When he goes to his friend’s house, I’ll tell him to be home at 8:00pm, but doesn’t come home until 8:30pm. When he gets home, I’ll ask, “ What time did I say to be home?” He will say, “Oh! I forgot!” This is why I think that video games are causing him to have short and long-term memory loss.
For example, when he wakes up he will ask me if he can play his video game. I tell him the same thing every morning, “No. After you get home from school, do your homework, practice your trombone, and we eat dinner, then you can play.” He will say, “Oh! Ok, I forgot!” He will then ask me one more time, as he is getting ready to leave for school. My
