English Should be the Official Language of the USA
English should be the official language of the United States. In a diverse country,
like the United States, few things are shared commonly between the citizens, uniting
them. Freedom, success, equal opportunities and a common language are a few of the
bonds. The common language makes everyone more equal, because it gives people equal
opportunities at the work place, social life and assimilation in general. Also, higher taxes
due to printing ballots and other government forms in multiple languages are costly to the
American taxpayer. Expensive and ineffective bilingual education programs are hurting
the immigrants and the taxpayers. Without English as the official language, no pressure is
being put on the immigrants to learn English, they will not need to learn it because of the
accommodating multilingual services currently offered to the other percent of the
population that does not have a working understanding of the English language.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned discrimination “on the ground of race, color or
national origin,” this lead to many reforms in bilingual services, multilingual ballots,
drivers license exam, and other government forms (Gallegos 102).
