Goodbye, Columbus Critique
I found it rather difficult to watch the film ?Goodbye Columbus?. The entire movie was extremely slow moving and at times it was hard to understand what was said. This movie was generally a story of social differences and of trying to fit in where you are not necessarily wanted, or where others think you don?t belong.
In this film, Neil is a recent college graduate who lives in Brooklyn, NY with his aunt and uncle. He lives with them because his parents moved to Arizona and he wanted to continue living in New York. He was invited to a local country club where he meets Barbara, a college student who is home for the summer and staying at her parent?s upper class home.
It is evident from the beginning that these two come from complete opposites of the social scale. When Neil gets home from the country club, his aunt is upset because she hasn?t fixed Neil?s dinner yet and his uncle is almost home. When Neil asks why they don?t all just eat the same meal together at the same time, that other families eat at the same time, his aunt replies ?big shots?, insinuating that only uppity-up families eat meals together.
