Napster
Music, often referred to as the “universal language,” can be downloaded from the
internet at no charge. Napster, created by Shawn Fanning, was a music web site that
allowed a person to download his favorite type of music at any time. One of the best
features of this service provided to the public was that there was no charge for the
service. Though banned by a Federal judge, Napster provided a genuine service to music
listeners worldwide.
As a young teenager, Shawn Fanning spent countless hours at his uncle’s
company, Net Games. This organization created and developed internet games. While
spending time at this business he was able to observe the computer technicians. He
learned valuable information about creating web sites and using all sorts of technology
that could be adapted to the internet. While in college, Shawn and his friends tried to
download music using the internet, but were unsuccessful in finding enough sources to
meet their needs. Shawn soon developed his own web site that was capable of allowing
internet users to download music. He named his newly found web site “Napster.” This
was Fanning’s nickname as a child because of his
