Taming of the Shrew meets the Dentist
The Taming of the Shrew is full of all kinds of interesting characters who have all kinds of interesting nuances. To say that some of them characters have small social issues is equivalent to one saying the Middle East has small peace problems. In this play I find the characters disturbing and their thought processes make me squirm with an uneasiness. Perhaps this was done by design but considering it is a comedy, I somehow doubt it. Either way, the unpleasantness of the characters and their ways reminds me of a good dental cleaning…necessary but not enjoyable. Anyway say, Ahhh!!
There used to be a saying that beauty is in the eye of the beer holder...or was it beholder? I guess it could be either. Katharina is a considered a shrew. I needed to know what a shrew was so I looked it up and Webster told me:
1 : any of a family (Soricidae) of small chiefly nocturnal insectivores related to the moles and distinguished by a long pointed snout, very small eyes, and velvety fur
2 : an ill-tempered scolding woman
