Honorable Men in a Dishonorable World
How can men be heros in the most unheroic circumstances? Three less than upstanding citizens portrayed in the novels Motherless Brooklyn, The Deuce, and in the movie Taxi Driver show how even “low-lifes” and criminals can perform very honorable acts to save three social outcasts who are in circumstances similar to or worse than themselves. The three men are comprised of a homeless, poor street bum, an Italian mobster, and a taxi driver turned murderer all of whom become corrupted by the unlawfulness so common in big city life. These three characters are Joey Cipriani, Frank Minna, and Travis Bickle.. The three social outcasts that they “save” from the streets and themselves are children who are either running away from their parents or a situation in which they feel they simply do not belong. These troubled youths are comprised of two teenage boys: one a half-breed Vietnamese kid Tony, nicknamed Duece, one orphan suffering from turrets syndrome and labeled a freak show named Lionel, and one teenage girl, a twelve year old runaway prostitute named Iris.
