Corporal Punishment
Corporal punishment is a very complex issue that has raised controversial beliefs in our society for many years. Corporal punishment is defined as "the use of physical force with the intention of causing a child to experience pain, but not injury, for the purpose of correction or control of the child's behavior”. Parents, schools and government have varying views on whether the effects of corporal punishment are more beneficial in correcting a child’s behavior or if the long-term effects are more harmful and threatening to the child.
I was raised with the understanding that corporal punishment was a part of life. If I did something wrong, whether it was doing something I was told not to, or talking back to my parents, the punishment was usually a spanking. Whenever I was punished, I was always completely aware of the reasons and don’t think it was ever abusive. Although I did not like the spankings, I think I learned to respect authority instead of constantly questioning it. Because I was raised this way and feel that I turned out okay, my attitude is that corporal punishment is okay.
