Sadako
Family Cultures in Japan
Japanese families have many different family customs. They also have many languages and religions. This paper is only about Sadako’s family and friends’ culture though. They live in the area of Hiroshima, where the first atomic bomb hit.
Sadako’s family has many customs just inside their house. They have an alter shelf for their dead ancestors. The alter shelf has a picture of the person and some of the person’s belongings. They also sleep on futons, beds that roll up to keep space. They have a tatani mat in their entranceway to wipe and put your shoes on. The girls wear silk kimonos, which are silk dresses with beautiful designs on them. Sadako’s family eats rice and soup for breakfast. They have bean cakes for a special treat. Instead of saying “You eat like a pig” when someone eats fast and sloppy, they say, “You eat like little dragon.” Instead of saying “You’re a slowpoke,” they say, “Don’t be such a turtle.” They also call each other “Chan” after they say the first name of the person they are addressing. This sort of means “sweetie” in English.
Outside of the home we see some Japanese culture as well. They have many holidays. There is
