The Most Popular and Most Racist Television Show of the 1950's

    THE MOST POPULAR AND MOST RACIST TELEVISION SHOW OF THE 1950’S Introduction On June 28, 1951, at 8:30pm Amos ‘n’ Andy premiered on CBS. Within hours of the airing of the first episode, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) criticized it for stereotyped characterization and hinted at a boycott of the show itself and the shows sponsor. Their response to Amos ‘n’ Andy suggested that it would be necessary to provide an example of why the show was considered to be of a racist manner. Thus, this proposal suggests that a study is needed to better understand why one of the most popular television series in the 1950’s is also one of the most racist of its time. The paper will be presented in five sections. The first section will present an explanation of the problem’s context. The second section will offer justification for new research. The third section frames the problem as a research question. The fourth section presents a review of literature. The final section puts forth a proposal for method of anaylsis.
