John Smith and Pocahontas
Captain John Smith Captured
The story of Pocahontas and John Smith has differed many times in the retellings. The story according to Pocahontas is a story of love prevailing over hate. Pocahontas’s love saves the life of Captain Smith and unites the white man and the Indian. In the accounts of John Smith he undergoes a ceremonial death that Pocahontas plays a part in, but it is not recorded that it was done out of love. The arrival to Jamestown, Captain Smith’s time in captivity, and his rescue are recorded below according to both accounts.
Pocahontas watched from the treetops, as men disembarked from what appeared to her as a floating island. She curiously continued to observe from a bush as a strange man with white skin, different from her red skin, washed his face in the rushing waterway below the waterfalls. When he spotted her, her beauty memorized him. The two instantly connected and discussed the different cultures and backgrounds they came from, each finding common ground with the other. Pocahontas is offended by John Smith’s use of the word savage towards her people. Although he tries to explain the word only means primitive, she points out to him that what he sees as primitive or savage is just different
