Blackout 2003
Blackout 2003
On August 14, 2003 at about 4:10 pm (edt) major losses of
electric power occurred in the northestern U.S. and Canada. No cause
was determined at the time of the incident, but the outages did not
appear to be the result of a terrorist attack. Although the event was
felt throughout the entire eastern interconnection, the south and
midwestern U.S. were not affected.
As of August 15, 2003 the center of this historic power failure
appears to began in the state of Michigan, near the city of Lansing
when a 345 kilovolt line tripped with no cause reported, soon
thereafter cascading throughout the Greatlakes; Ohio, New York
City, Ontario, Quebec, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Connecticut.
