I’ve heard it said that if the greater majority of the citizens in the greater Indianapolis metropolitan area only knew what happens to the White river every time it rains, we would most likely hear an uproar of grossed out people. These people would feel angry, sick, and unsanitary. They would want to know the, “who, what, where, why, and how,” question on this subject. Every year in the Indianapolis and surrounding areas we dump millions upon hundreds of million of gallons raw sewage and other pollutants into the White River and the tributaries that flow into this river. This along with the occurrence of extremely high runoff factor fills the river up very quickly and moves it down stream very quickly. This means that not only the sewer overflows are going down the river, but also whatever pollutants the rain water has picked up on its way to the river. There are multitudes of things that can contaminate the rain runoff into a body of water, hitting the surface of a driveway, the road, a parking lot, a lawn, or any other surface that the water would be able to take something with it. Some of the people in Indianapolis may take the view that as long as they are taking the water out of the river further up stream than
