FESPACO 2003 - Its Progress Many may ask, what is FEAPACO? Well, let me shed a little light on that. For one week every two years, the city of Ouagadougou holds the largest festival of the continent – the Pan-African film and television festival called FESPACO. It brings members of the film industry, African and otherwise, to share their knowledge and ideas on how best to improve and promote their work, as well as to create and establish working relationships. The festival was first established in 1969, and by January 7, 1972, became “an institution by governmental decree”. In that same year, the first official winner of the festival was Oumarou Ganda of Niger, who won best film award with “Le Wazzou Polygame”. Since then, there have been winners from Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and other parts of Africa. In 1995, the winner of the festival was Rob Reiner with his film “Misery”.
