Political organization for Aboriginal people has been a long and harrowing road. This essay seeks to provide a brief insight into its development. I shall introduce the major players and events in Aboriginal Politics from 1945 to present day as constraints allow. In developing this essay it has become apparent to me that legislation of Aboriginal people in Canada has been a multi layered affair of hidden agendas and broken promises. As the essay progresses I shall point out instances as they come up and briefly touch on the implications of such legislation. Serious attempts at political organization came to the fore in the 1920’s. As is the case in new political movements for the oppressed, it took great courage for the new leaders to stand up and be counted.
