Barbara Kruger has been deemed one of the most influential artists in the postmodern art movement. Her works are characterised by their provocative black and white photographic images and bold statements concerning cultural representations of power, identity and sexuality which challenge stereotypes and clichés. Since the early 1970’s Kruger has been using slogans to question the social and political forces within society, and to promote causes she believes in such as supporting legal abortion and fighting domestic violence.
Kruger was born in 1945 in New Jersey. She studied art and design in New York, and later worked as a graphic designer, art director and picture editor in the art departments at House and Garden, Aperture Mademoiselle magazine and other publications.
