Australian Legal system and women in the workplace

    Women have been discriminated against throughout history. One example of this is in the workplace. In Australia the legal system has tried to address some of these problems. They have made laws to equalise the differences between the genders and have tried to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women in the workplace. However, despite all the changes that have occurred in the Australian legal system to stop unequal treatment and discrimination in the workplace, women although less needy then before, are still disadvantaged. In the past, women have traditionally been housewives looking after children and husband. It wasn’t until the early 20th century that women became a separate ‘entity’ from the husbands meaning that women were able to own land, enter court cases with others without her husband. This abolished the concept of unita caro. Attitudes towards women in the workplace has changed from a domestic situation or a role/profession designated to them as women like teaching, nursing and being secretaries; to nowadays where women are able and wanting to gain positions in most jobs giving they have the right qualifications.
