In past few years, data networks have been growing at a much faster rate than that of voice networks. This continuing trend is most commonly attributed to the rapid growth of internetworking services. Before long, the amount of data traffic will exceed that of voice traffic, although voice is becoming more popular as the technology continues to develop. As a result of this trend, the commonly sent voice signals are overlaying data signals more than ever before. These networks are to include Voice over Frame Relay, Voice over IP and Voice over ATM. Moreover, the emerging technology has been most easily evident via the use of V.34 and V.92 modems, where data is sent over a voice signal.
As Frame Relay was introduced in the early 1990s, data technology was not originally designed to carry voice. Despite a numerous amounts of valid uncertainties about the reliability of voice over frames, the promise of "free voice" eventually proved too glamorous.
