Reflections
When I applied to PGSIS I knew that the goal of this program was for students from around the state to reach a higher understanding in the field of international studies. What I did not expect was that a huge portion of the experience was to gain a higher education in the field of ourselves. Reflecting on ourselves is a subject overlooked completely in high school. Is it because if we focus on ourselves we might begin to actually think for ourselves? Throughout the five weeks I came into contact with issues such as realizing how little I know and how I learn while the topic of choice and how choice relates to power challenged who I really am and what I know.
I know nothing. When I first arrived at PGSIS I knew that I was no where near the smartest or the most assertive student here. After five weeks I understand that it is not just academic knowledge that I do not know I have come to the realization that I know nothing and maybe by understanding that I am beginning to learn something.
In learning about another culture or learning about anything in general people try to tell you exactly how to be or how to do it. When you travel to a foreign country, at least in a group, it is usually suggested to take cultural
