“The Cask of Amontillado“ by Edgar Allen Poe

    The Tale “The cask of Amontillado“ written by Edgar Allen Poe in 1846 is set in an unnamed European city. Poe writes this story from the perspective of Montresor who vows revenge against Fortunato in an effort to support his family motto: "Nemo me impune lacessit" or "No one insults me with impunity." Montresor is the protagonist and also the narrator of the story. He has made a sadistic plan to realize his revenge. And it is part of his plan that Fortunato after all realizes that Montresor had given him the opportunity to escape of this horrible scene just to stress the cruelty and the effect on his victim. First of all Montresor describes his aims on Fortunato. He wants revenge for the insults that were made on him by Fortunate. Montresor tells that as a first person narrator in a special way. It seems that he directly speaks to the reader as one of an audience that is just watching him doing his deed because he integrates the reader. “You, who so well know the nature of my soul, will not suppose, however, that I gave utterance to a threat.” (p. 747) By doing this, Poe creates a certain atmosphere and excitement, because the reader is directly integrated in the story and has to make his first decision: whether the narr
