Van Druten- \“I Remember Mama\“
John William Van Druten
(1901-?)
Van Druten was born in London, England on June 1, 1901. He was the son of a
Dutch man, Wilhelmus Van Druten, a banker, and also an English mother. Van Druten
attended University College School London, where he began to show his talent for
writing. However, he began to practice law and was rather good at it. He wrote many
poems and short stories and then submitted them to magazines. Only a few
submissions actually were published, others were sent back because they lacked the
special quality that the publisher was looking for. In 1923, a three-act play entitled “The
Return Half” was published in a magazine. Van Druten also wrote a play entitled, “Young
Woodley” and it was bought by an English and an American manager for a Broadway
production in London. In 1926, Van Druten quit his career in law and then began to
devote his career to writing. Ever since 1926 he has divided his living quarters between
to continents North America and Europe, because he loves them both and they inspire
him. One of Van Druten’s interest was art. He likes all kinds of art from the theater to
even the drawing. Van Druten was highly inspired from traveling. He saw man
