Erosion of Our Rights
While listening to a joke, a story, a movie, advice, or a song, how often have we acted upon our feelings after taking something the wrong way? When John Wayne shot someone in a movie that did not mean for us to go shoot someone too. John Wayne never shot anyone; he was shooting people in movies strictly for entertainment. While most people understand that movies are not meant to suggest we live our lives in a similar way, many cannot accept a similar interpretation of music. Some people believe listening to a song, when the listener has to infer the meaning; can cause such damage to a mind. Parents are blaming the musicians for writing a song that made their child do something wrong or harmful. In doing this, parents are trying to halt the artists’ first amendment rights, protected under the Constitution, by not allowing stores to carry music that has a violent nature. Because an uninformed public blames musicians for unfortunate incidents, claimed to be caused by the lyrics in a song, we are slowly eroding our First Amendment rights by allowing the censorship of music. By informing the public and rating the explicit material in the music, we can find a happy medium between the angered parents and the
