Carson McCullers is considered one of the most enduring Southern novelist, short story writer, dramatist, and poet during the mid 1900’s. She was originally categorized as a southern gothic because of how she wrote about isolation and the misfits of society. Most contemporary scholars agree with Louis Rubin, Jr.’s contention that her protagonists function as “exemplars of the wretchedness of the human condition.” Carson McCullers made significant contributions to American Literature through the 1940’s to 1960’s, especially involving her use of gothic style in a southern format, presenting new ideas of literature, which opened many eyes.
Carson McCullers was born February 19, 1917, in Columbus, Georgia and died September 29, 1967 in Nyack, New York and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery also in New York. McCullers was raised in the south and was a tomboy who always loved the woods and nature and was said to always be seen by her self, just looking and observing. She learned at an early age what she felt and how to express herself. She fell in love with music and made that her goal in life. The gothic style she later used to write with was learned here.
