Censorship Of Pornography In Canada

    Our society frequently focuses on the obscenity that is centred in media and literature as a reason for the social inequalities that exist. Many feminists, along with politicians, have taken a stance against pornography, but just as many have taken a different side, the anti-censorship stance. The denotative meaning of censorship is the examination of books, letters, movies, etc. and the removal of anything thought not right for the community to see or hear. In other words, censorship takes away the right of the individual to decide what is appropriate for them to see or hear. What might offend one person may not offend another person, and it is unjust to prohibit someone from reading or seeing “inappropriate” material based on the opinion of someone else. There have been two major legal cases in Canada that have dealt with censorship laws of obscene materials, and have been the reasoning for the current legislation placed on so-called “degrading” materials. Pornography needs to be approached with open minds, knowing that a freedom of expression has been granted upon all citizens in our society.
