Andrew Warhol and the Pop Art Andrew Warhol was born in 1928 in Pittsburgh to immigrant parents of Czechoslavakian stock. Andrew was born at the time of the Wall Street Crash (1929) and the great depression. Like millions of others, Warhol’s father was thus unemployed and Andrews early childhood was extremely deprived and difficult. After some time family fortunes improved and following his early education he attend a commercial design course at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Institute of Technology. While there, Warhol became familiar with the writings of Maholy Nagy and the designs work of the Bauhaus in Germany. After Graduation in 1949, Andy moved to New York to begin his career as commercial Artist. One of his first commissions was for a series of shoe illustrations and when they appeared, the final ‘a’ of his name was omitted from the credit line thereafter he was Andy Warhol.
