Learning a new language in a foreign country

    In 1993, I moved to New York from Dominican Republic, which is my native country. In Dominican Republic Spanish is the primary language and English is secondary, but is not commonly used. I could not speak any English; therefore, school was extremely difficult with English being the primary language. My interpretation of English language was that it sounded backwards and just did not make any sense. I remember times when my dad would get mad at me because I used to watch Spanish channels instead of English channels. He used to say, “ The more you hear English the better you will understand it. When you can do that, then you will be able to speak it.” To achieve dynamic communication skills, I devoted most of my time and patience into learning as much as I could. So I started reading magazines, newspapers and novels to enhance my vocabulary skills. I learned how language is used as a scientific field, how it is used as a language, a tool for communication and carrier information. I thought of communication as a universal bonding agent; therefore it must be understood in order to achieve any goal in today’s competitive world.
